However, there is currently no dedicated organization focused on fostering connections and facilitating social interactions for those who may have been deprived of such opportunities due to health issues, be they mental or physical, or other life challenges.
Our mission is to bridge this gap and fulfill this crucial need. The Society also provides a continual flow of information to members, parents, professionals and anyone requesting medical, educational or professional information on FD. -

Familial Dysautonomia (FD, used to be known as Riley–Day syndrome) is a disorder of the autonomic nervous system which affects the sensory, sympathetic and some parasympathetic neurons in the autonomic and sensory nervous system resulting in variable symptoms including: insensitivity to pain, inability to produce tears, development delay, frequent lung infection caused by reflux or poor swallowing and labile blood pressure (episodic hypertension and postural hypotension).

FD suffers can vary immensely in the severity of their symptoms, which is why many go undiagnosed. Intelligence levels are not affected despite delays in their development and many go through mainstream education and can go on to live independent lives with some medical support.

Our Babraham Research Campus Impact Report 2023/24 provides insights into the effectiveness of our pre-seed programme for early-stage life science ventures - Accelerate@Babraham. Of course, we've been told how valuable the package of support is to those selected, but being able to quantify the impact really brings home the difference it makes. 🌟Since its inception in 2018 the programme has nurtured 26 companies which together have raised £72.5m in funding and have a collective market value of £139m. 📈Employing 117 people collectively, these start-ups have achieved a 1.9x return on investment while speeding up their fundraising timelines by 12 months compared to peers outside the programme. These exceptional findings are testament to the valuable input from our Accelerate partners and supporters and all involved should be very proud indeed. Our new report with Nuffield Council on Bioethics assesses the potential benefits, risks and appropriate role of AI-powered genomic health prediction (AIGHP) in the UK health system. While AIGHP could have some benefits within healthcare, there are significant risks concerning privacy and discrimination, as well as structural and societal problems that could emerge from its widespread roll-out for prevention at the population-level. The risks and concerns highlighted in the report relate to scientific uncertainty about the effectiveness of the emerging technology, privacy risks around the use of sensitive personal data on a mass scale, new forms of genetic discrimination (particularly in the context of health insurance), structural challenges surrounding NHS adoption of new technologies and a lack of evidence on public attitudes towards use of the technology. Recent report by Tony Blair Institute for Global Change recommends implementing our PhD programme, the Venture Science Doctorate, as one of a number of ideas to "make the UK... one of the best places in the world to start a biotech company". Other recommendations include: -> building a "laboratory for biodesign", -> programmatic follow-on fund and late stage scale-up grants for synbio companies, -> an integrated plan for addressing future pandemics aswell as a biosecurity taskforce, -> the creation of an "AI Doctor" for every citizen -> and much, much more. Uniting the UK’s Health Data: A Huge Opportunity for Society’ by Professor Cathie Sudlow OBE https://lnkd.in/eW3jgjTY A review of the UK health data landscape commissioned by the Chief Medical Officer for England, the UK National Statistician and NHS England’s National Director for Transformation. The review highlights ‘the importance of bringing together data from multiple sources of data to help improve the treatment of current patients, ensuring they get the best diagnosis and the most appropriate treatment, and be sued operationally to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the NHS and health and social care systems for all’ It’s great to see UK LLC discussed (p131) as the national secure data environment for longitudinal population-based research together with a data linkage service and resource to its partner studies and a simple one-application process to UK-based researchers applying to access linked longitudinal data. As a result, it enables cross-sector research and supports researchers to respond to immediate and future policy needs ‘The greater availability of large-scale, diverse linked data from across multiple cohorts will help researchers to study rarer outcomes and seldom reached populations’.
